Liguria origins:
Diodoro Siculo writes this of the
Ligurians:
«Their land being mountainous
and full of trees, some of them busy themselves all day cutting
wood, for which they use powerful and heavy implements; others,
who seek to cultivate the land, are engaged in splitting stones,
since the ground is so arid that with their tools they lift up not
even a lump of earth , with which they lift not even a stone. Nonetheless,
even in such hardships, on the sheer strength of obstinacy in work
they overcome nature itself [...] they frequently hunt, and find
large quantities of game, with which they compensate for lack of
fodder; and it so it happens that, running through their snow covered
mountains, and accustoming themselves to the most difficult parts
of the woods, they toughen their bodies, and strengthen their muscles
admirably. Some of them, due to lack of supplies drink water, and
live on the meat of domesticated and wild animals. »
